How to read HFSQL .FIC files without WinDev

HFSQL Classic data lives in .FIC and .MMO files. You do not need a WinDev licence to read them: PC SOFT publishes an ODBC driver for HFSQL, and any ODBC-aware tool can use it.

What is in an HFSQL Classic folder

A data folder holds one .FIC file per table and .MMO files for memo contents. The structure of the tables (names, types, order) is described by the project analysis, a .wdd file, which usually sits with the project and not always inside the data folder itself.

The ODBC driver route

PC SOFT provides an HFSQL ODBC driver that you install once on the machine. With it, the files can be queried like a database from any tool or language that speaks ODBC. This is the same driver Fic2All uses, so installing it is the one prerequisite outside Fic2All itself.

Pay attention to the driver's bitness: an ODBC driver generally has to match the application that uses it.

Where Fic2All fits

Reading a few tables through ODBC by hand is fine. Moving a whole database is different: dozens of tables, memo fields, protected files and a need to prove nothing was lost. Fic2All automates that path. It reads each table through the driver using the structure from your analysis, writes it to SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL or SQL Server, and produces a report of rows read versus rows written.

Protected files

If a file is protected by a password, the driver needs that password to open it. Fic2All asks for it when needed, uses it for that file only and does not store it.
